Dubai Airport DXB: Terminals, Connections and Getting into the City
A practical guide to Dubai International: three terminals, connections and baggage, Metro, taxis and transfers into the city — and why DXB is not DWC.
Your ticket says DXB, but that alone is not enough to plan the journey. Dubai International has three passenger terminals, and the distance between the areas you need can matter more than it appears on a map.
The short answer: before travelling, check not only the airport code but also the terminal for every flight, whether all sectors are on one ticket, where your baggage is checked through to, and how you will reach the city. Those four points remove most of the uncertainty.
If you are still assembling the whole trip, begin with our guide to preparing for a first visit to Dubai. The guide below focuses on the airport itself.
First, do not confuse DXB with DWC
DXB is Dubai International Airport, the main international airport close to central Dubai. DWC is Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai South. Dubai Airports states that they are approximately 60 km apart.
This matters particularly on a connection. If one flight arrives at DXB and the next departs from DWC, you are not simply changing terminals. You must clear immigration, collect baggage, enter the city and allow your own time for the surface journey and a new check-in.
Bellboy’s advice: compare the three-letter airport codes first and the terminal numbers second. The same city in two bookings does not necessarily mean the same airport.
How DXB’s three terminals work
Terminal 1
Terminal 1 serves many international airlines. Its departures area is connected to the D Gates by an internal airport train. If your boarding pass shows a D gate, it does not mean you have arrived at the wrong terminal: after the formalities, follow the signs to the train and your gate.
Terminal 2
Terminal 2 is used for regional, international and selected special flights. It sits separately from Terminals 1 and 3, so you should not expect a simple walk between the buildings. flydubai may use different terminals depending on the flight; check the terminal in your own booking and again before setting out.
Terminal 3
Terminal 3 is primarily associated with Emirates, while selected partner flights may also use it. It contains the A, B and C Gates. Some areas are connected on foot, while A Gates are reached by an internal train. Even when you remain inside one terminal, do not leave the journey to your gate until the last minute.
Identify the terminal and travel scenario first; only then choose the sign, transport and time buffer.
What to check the day before you fly
Airport code. Your booking should show DXB if you are using Dubai International.
Terminal. Confirm it in the airline’s app or website and check it again before leaving.
Gate. It may be assigned or changed later than the terminal, so use the airport displays on the day.
Baggage. At check-in, ask whether it is tagged to the final destination or must be collected in Dubai.
Arrival time. Follow your airline’s requirement rather than a universal rule found online.
A connection on one ticket is not the same as separate tickets
When both sectors are in one booking, the airline will normally structure the connection and explain whether baggage is checked through to the final destination. On arrival, follow the Connections signs and confirm the new gate on the displays.
With separate tickets, more responsibility usually sits with the passenger. You may have to clear immigration, collect baggage, pass customs, reach the correct terminal and check in again. For this scenario, adding the published flight times is not enough: allow for border formalities, travel between buildings, queues and the check-in deadline.
Your right to enter the UAE or cross the border again depends on your passport and immigration conditions. If you are unsure whether a self-transfer is possible, confirm it with both airlines and the official UAE entry rules before buying separate tickets.
Three questions to ask at check-in
To which airport and city is my baggage tagged?
Will I receive my onward boarding pass now?
Do I need to clear immigration in Dubai?
Getting from DXB into Dubai
Metro
Red Line stations serve Terminals 1 and 3. The Metro is a sensible option when your hotel is close to a station, you arrive during operating hours and can manage your baggage comfortably. You need a Nol card or an appropriate ticket. Operating hours vary by day and may change for holidays, so check the RTA timetable before arrival.
Terminal 2 has no direct Metro station. The journey may involve a bus or taxi to a convenient interchange, which means a direct car can be simpler after a night flight or with substantial baggage.
Official airport taxi
Dubai Taxi Company ranks operate around the clock at every terminal. Follow the official signs after leaving arrivals. This option does not require you to find an exact parking level in an app and works well when the hotel address is already saved.
Uber, Careem and Bolt
Ride-hailing apps show the vehicle category and pickup instructions, but collection takes place in designated areas rather than at any terminal door. For Terminal 3 arrivals, see our separate guide to the Uber and Careem waiting lounge and pickup process.
Pre-booked transfer
A transfer is particularly useful after a late arrival, with children, with unusual baggage or on a first visit. Before paying, confirm the meeting terminal, included waiting time, how the driver will contact you and what happens if the flight is delayed.
Your transport choice also depends on where you stay. If the address is not yet decided, first compare Dubai neighbourhoods for a first visit, then calculate the journey from the airport to the exact hotel.
Connectivity immediately after landing
You may need data to confirm the terminal, open an address, contact a driver and approve a ride in an app. It is easier to install an eSIM before departure while you have stable Wi-Fi; first check that your phone supports eSIM and read the activation rules for the selected package. You can check a UAE package in the blueSIM bot. If your device does not support eSIM, a physical SIM from a local operator after arrival remains a practical fallback.
First decide whether you will remain airside. Terminal 3 has an airside hotel across Concourses A, B and C, while different lounges and rest services operate across the airport. Access, hours and the ability to reach a particular facility depend on your terminal, gate, ticket and immigration scenario.
If you are considering entering the city, use our 6, 12 and 24-hour Dubai layover plan. It starts by subtracting immigration, baggage, transport and the protected boarding buffer before choosing a city route.
Do not book a service based only on the airport name. Confirm that it is in an area you can access and that it does not require immigration clearance or a terminal change.
Assistance for passengers who need additional support
Dubai Airports recommends telling the airline, tour operator or travel agent about assistance needs as early as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before travel. Include mobility restrictions, a personal wheelchair, an assistance animal or the need for an escort. The airline will pass the request to the airport assistance team.
A short DXB checklist
DXB, not DWC;
the exact terminal for each sector;
one ticket or separate bookings;
baggage tagged through or collected in Dubai;
entry conditions if you must leave the transit area;
the hotel address saved in Latin characters;
Metro, taxi, ride-hailing app or confirmed transfer;
internet access immediately after landing;
current departure and check-in timing from the airline.
Bellboy’s advice: do not try to memorise the entire airport. Save four things: the DXB code, your terminal, the baggage status and your next step after leaving the aircraft. That is enough to move calmly.
Terminals, transport hours, pickup points and connection procedures can change. Before travelling, check your airline booking and the latest information from Dubai Airports and RTA.
