Moscow metro and city transport: plan one clear route

Metro, MCC or MCD? Understand the network, choose a ticket and plan your journey all the way to the right exit.

Moscow metro and city transport: plan one clear route

The nearest station is not always the best starting point. A slightly longer walk can mean one fewer change, a simpler platform and an exit closer to your destination. In Moscow, a useful route is not just a coloured line: it includes the way in, the interchange and the last stretch on foot.

You do not need to learn the entire network before your first journey. Start with one destination and one workable route. Our first guide to understanding Moscow helps put that destination in the wider city.

Three rail systems, not three words for the same thing

  • Metro: the city’s urban rapid-transit network, with lines identified by names, numbers and colours.
  • MCC — МЦК: the Moscow Central Circle, a surface railway ring. Do not confuse it with the metro’s Circle Line or Big Circle Line.
  • MCD — МЦД: the Moscow Central Diameters, suburban rail routes running across Moscow and into the surrounding region.

Use the official Moscow Metro app to compare routes and changes. For a first journey, fewer interchanges can be more useful than saving a few minutes on the screen. Include the actual address, not just the nearest-looking station.

Troika is the carrier; the fare is a separate choice

Troika — Тройка is a reusable transport card. Buying the card does not itself buy unlimited travel. You need a balance or an appropriate ticket recorded on it; official purchase and top-up options are listed by Moscow Transport.

For occasional journeys, compare the pay-as-you-go Wallet option with a pass suitable for your stay. For several journeys a day, compare the current unlimited products. Check their validity period and MCD zone coverage before paying; a pass is not automatically cheaper merely because you are staying several days.

For a first purchase, a staffed ticket counter is a useful place to clarify the card, fare, payment method and coverage together. Do not assume that a contactless logo means your foreign card will work: foreign-issued Visa and Mastercard cards do not function in Russia through those networks. See the notices from Visa and Mastercard. Arrange a usable payment method before your first trip.

MCD: remember both ends of the journey

On MCD, validate the same card at entry and exit, including stations with stand-alone validators rather than gates. An uncompleted journey can block the card. Fares also depend on the zone: consult the official MCD tariff guidance.

This matters when an apparently ordinary city route continues into the suburbs. Check the destination’s zone before assuming that your existing fare covers the whole journey.

MCD is not a reserved long-distance train. If you are leaving Moscow for another city, use our railway stations and departure guide to identify the correct terminal and ticket.

A free transfer still has conditions

Eligible tickets allow transfers between metro, MCC and MCD without an additional charge within the applicable time window. The precise conditions depend on the ticket and connection: check the official ticket rules. Do not treat every walk between nearby stations as a free interchange.

Keep the same card or payment medium for the journey. If you top up remotely, follow the required recording or activation step before travelling; an online payment confirmation alone is not proof that the ticket is ready on the card. Moscow Transport explains remote Troika top-ups.

Use surface transport for the last stretch

A bus, electric bus or tram can spare a long walk or an awkward interchange. Check the stop, direction and stop name where you want to leave. Register your journey on boarding using the validator, as explained by Moscow Transport. A valid pass does not remove the need to register the trip.

For heavy luggage or limited mobility, choose by the whole journey: entrances, stairs, interchanges and street crossings. A car may be easier in some situations, but its journey time depends on traffic. For the separate airport leg, consult our Moscow airport transfer guide rather than assuming that an urban ticket takes you into every terminal.

Check the return journey before it gets late

The metro lists daily entry and interchange hours of 05:30–01:00. Individual vestibules may differ; consult the station opening information. This is not a promise of a last train at 01:00 from every platform. Check MCC, MCD and surface-service schedules separately.

A small preparation that makes a large city easier

  • Save your destination and station name in Cyrillic.
  • Check the line, direction, interchange and final exit.
  • Prepare a usable payment method and the correct ticket.
  • On MCD, validate both entry and exit.
  • Save the route offline and leave time for the walk.

Mobile data helps with navigation, but your basic plan should survive without it. If considering our eSIM service blueSIM, ask the blueSIM bot to confirm current Russia availability, device compatibility and activation conditions before buying. We do not promise immediate connectivity.

One clear route is enough for a beginning. Once you have completed it, the next journey becomes less about understanding the whole map and more about making one sensible choice.
