First establish whether you are entering Egypt or flying onward. Check your terminal, baggage destination and next step before leaving transit.
At Cairo Airport, first establish your situation: arrival into Egypt, an international connection or an onward domestic flight. Immigration, baggage collection and terminal changes depend on that answer. Do not head for the exit simply because most passengers are doing so.
Save every flight number, terminal, boarding pass and baggage receipt offline. If the route is unclear, show them to transfer staff before leaving the controlled area.
Four checks before departure
Confirm that the ticket specifies CAI and check each segment's terminal.
Establish whether this is one ticket or separate tickets. One online purchase does not prove it is one ticket.
Ask at check-in where the bag is checked to, then read its tag.
Confirm whether you need a boarding pass, entry into Egypt or baggage recheck, and the check-in deadline.
Check with the operating carrier and the official CAI flight page, then the displays after landing. Do not assume an airline always uses the same terminal. Ask about unfamiliar terminal labels rather than guessing from nearby buildings.
If you are entering Egypt
Follow Arrivals and Passport Control with the required documents and entry permission. Collect baggage, pass customs and proceed into the public arrivals hall. This describes an entering passenger's route, not every connecting traveller's route.
Rules depend on passport and itinerary, not on reading English or presumed UK/US citizenship. Check e-Visa eligibility on the official Egypt e-Visa portal and general preparation in the first-trip Egypt guide. An application or paid transfer does not replace permission to enter.
Show both flights and your baggage receipt to confirm the next step. AI-generated illustration; not a map or documentary photo of a specific CAI desk.
If you have an onward flight
For an international connection, first look for Transfer or Transit and show both flights to staff. One ticket does not automatically remove controls, and two tickets do not determine whether you can remain airside. You need a confirmed procedure for your flights, baggage and documents.
Even if baggage is tagged to the final destination, ask whether it must be collected in Cairo: the tag does not override local procedures. Confirm instructions particularly when international and domestic segments meet; EGYPTAIR publishes specific through-check restrictions for routes via domestic Egyptian airports.
Without an onward boarding pass, use the transfer desk. For separate tickets, confirm airside handling in advance; otherwise entry, baggage collection, customs and a fresh check-in may be needed. Establish entry eligibility before buying that connection.
Changing terminals
The airport's APM page describes free transport between terminals and other airport locations. Ask staff about current operation, the correct station and the permitted route for your passenger status. A train's existence does not prove that the entire transfer avoids entry or border control.
Train running time is not total connection time. Add waiting, station access, controls, baggage, check-in and the walk to the gate. Do not go landside to catch a train until your onward route has been confirmed. Do not walk between buildings on vehicle roads.
For a tight connection, show the departure time to the transfer desk immediately. With separate tickets, allow for an inbound delay: the next carrier is not automatically required to change your ticket without applicable arrangements.
If the bag is missing
Contact the airline or its baggage handler at reclaim, preferably before customs. Have the tag, boarding pass, bag description, delivery address and reachable contact ready. Ask for a missing-baggage report and keep its number and copy.
Lost property and tracing checked baggage are different services. If no agent is available, document the situation and contact the carrier promptly through an official channel. Telling a driver or hotel does not replace reporting to the airline.
Connectivity and meeting the driver
For maps and messages, you can select a suitable blueSIM eSIM in advance. Check compatibility, Egypt coverage and when the plan starts; install over reliable internet before departure. Follow the plan's instructions for the data line and roaming, monitoring the primary SIM's charges separately.
Distinguish connectivity from the device's regulatory status: the Egypt SIM, eSIM and IMEI guide explains the issue. Keep the address and a backup contact method offline.
Send the driver your flight number, terminal, meeting point and updated timing after a delay. Confirm the car, total price, payment and pickup location. Do not assume any waiting vehicle is your booked transfer or change terminals without agreement. Use the agreed backup procedure if data is unavailable.
Departure and Bellboy's advice
Recheck the terminal before returning to CAI and send the flight number to the driver. Recommended arrival time, check-in closure and gate closure are different deadlines. EGYPTAIR publishes its own timings; these do not apply to every airline. Online check-in does not remove document checks, bag drop or screening; consult the carrier's airport instructions.
Keep a simple sequence in mind: flight → connection status → baggage → next control or exit. Ask staff about any unclear step before crossing into another area. That is more useful than relying on someone else's fastest route.
Terminals, transfer routes, entry rules and check-in deadlines change. Confirm your ticket's conditions with the carrier; no connection time is universally safe.
