Egypt for the first time: what to prepare before you go

Start with a route rather than a sightseeing list. Prepare entry documents, connectivity, payment and the airport journey before departure.

Egypt for the first time: what to prepare before you go

For a first trip to Egypt, choose the main experience first: Cairo and Giza, a Red Sea stay or a Nile Valley journey. That decision shapes your airport, accommodation, transfers and budget. Combining distant regions in a short holiday can turn the trip into repeated check-ins.

Begin with four decisions: documents, the first hotel's address, connectivity and the airport journey. They form the basis of an organised arrival; insurance, money and route restrictions also need checking.

Choose your Egypt

Cairo and Giza suit a trip centred on museums, pyramids and city life. Choose an address by the journeys to your planned sights, not map distance alone: traffic and transfers affect the day.

Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh and other Red Sea resorts offer a different pattern: a hotel, a particular beach and selected outings. Check the actual shore access, entry into the sea and seasonal facilities. For November–January, the Hurghada winter hotel and beach guide helps assess wind and a specific heated pool rather than the hotel's general photograph.

Treat Luxor and Aswan as a distinct part of the itinerary, with temples, tombs, the Nile and travelling time. For a short stay choose one region; combine two only after checking real connections. Experience Egypt's official planning information provides an overview.

Save these before departure

  • The first hotel's address and confirmation, ideally including its Arabic name.
  • Flight number, airport and terminal, driver's contact and meeting point.
  • Passport and visa documents, insurer's details and assistance procedure.
  • Offline copies, a backup contact method and a modest cash reserve.

Agree late check-in and what happens to the transfer if the flight is delayed. Confirm the full vehicle price, luggage, child seat and payment method where relevant. Insurance must cover your activities and route; holding a policy does not make every incident covered.

Entry: check your own passport

English does not imply British or US citizenship. Requirements depend on passport, purpose and itinerary. Check the nationality list and your entry conditions on the official Egypt e-Visa portal. If your situation is not covered, consult an Egyptian consulate; electronic visas are not available to everyone.

The portal lists a passport valid for at least six months from arrival, an e-Visa printout, an itinerary and accommodation details among its requirements. Apply early, await approval and follow the official application and printing instructions. Paying for an application is not approval; a visa does not guarantee admission at the border.

Do not extend a resort area's special entry arrangements to Cairo or Luxor. If relying on a special scheme, check its permitted territory, duration and compatibility with every excursion. An old visa price or forum post is not sufficient evidence.

Connectivity and the phone itself are separate checks

For navigation and driver contact, you can choose an eSIM through blueSIM before travelling. Confirm Egypt coverage in the particular plan, data allowance and device compatibility. An EID shown after dialling *#06# indicates technical eSIM support; check the model and network lock too. Apple explains the iPhone checks.

Install the profile over reliable internet before departure. Installation and the plan's start are different: blueSIM says validity begins on first connection to a supported network, normally with up to 180 days for initial activation. Check your order's conditions before paying. Unused-profile returns depend on timing and payment method; a 30-day unconditional refund to the card is not promised.

This is mobile data without a local number. You can retain your usual number on the primary line; check its roaming charges and select the correct data line. Enable roaming for the travel eSIM only as its instructions require.

Separately, read the Egypt SIM, eSIM and IMEI guide. Buying data does not automatically resolve an imported phone's regulatory status. Current provisions come from Egypt's NTRA. Do not assume a new SIM fixes every device restriction; keep the address and documents offline.

Your first minutes after landing

After immigration and baggage, confirm the contact and meeting point. If data does not connect, use saved details and your agreed backup contact method. Establish where the booked vehicle is waiting before looking for another driver.

For an independent airport journey, confirm current options with the official transport desk or chosen app, including pickup location and final price. In Hurghada, the guide to a driver asking for more than the app price covers a common dispute.

For the airport route and onward flights, use the Cairo Airport arrival and connection guide.

Money, onward travel and everyday agreements

Egyptian pounds help with small expenses; card acceptance depends on the establishment and your card. Ask your bank about overseas use, fees and a backup payment method. Compare the exchange rate and final amount rather than exchanging the whole budget at once. Experience Egypt provides general payment and transport information.

When comparing planes, trains and buses, count the full journey: travel to the station or airport, waiting, baggage and check-in. Before a remote excursion, confirm access and arrangements with a licensed provider and consult your foreign ministry's current travel advice.

Follow clothing requirements at religious sites. Agree the scope, price and currency of a service before accepting it; clarify what “all included” means. A saved confirmation is more useful than an argument about assumptions.

Bellboy's advice

Leave room for travel and check-in on day one. A clear region, checked documents, prepared connectivity and an agreed transfer are worth more than one additional distant excursion. Add to the itinerary once the basic arrangements work.
