Ill in Turkey: how to use travel medical insurance
Know when to call 112 and how to contact your assistance service. Check the clinic, payment arrangements, medicines and claim documents.
In an emergency, call 112
For a life-threatening situation, unconsciousness, difficulty breathing, severe bleeding or serious injury, call 112. Give the exact address, a landmark and what happened. Do not delay help for a policy, guarantee letter or insurer’s response. Tell medical staff if the condition worsens; medical services assess urgency.
Inform assistance where the patient is and where they were taken as soon as possible. For non-emergency care, contact the service listed in the policy before choosing a clinic, provided arranging cover does not delay necessary treatment.
Find the correct contact
The insurer and assistance company may differ: one handles the contract, the other organises help. Use the medical-assistance contact in your policy, app or insurer’s instructions, rather than an unverified intermediary.
Prepare the policy number, patient’s name and birth date, identification, Turkish address, symptom onset and return contact. Describe symptoms, injury, medicines taken, allergies and existing conditions accurately. Send required health details through a verified channel, not an open chat.
A concierge can help arrange contact; confirm the referral and insurance cover with the medical assistance service named in your policy.
Confirm the arrangements
Record the case reference, contact time and instructions. Confirm the clinic’s name and address, appointment, transport and interpretation. Ask for written confirmation.
Check which services and amounts are authorised, who pays, and any excess, co-payment or deposit. Ask separately about medicines. A case reference is not approval of every treatment cost. Agree any non-emergency change of clinic first.
If assistance does not respond, try other official policy channels and record attempts. Do not wait indefinitely when care is needed; seek medical help and notify the insurer as soon as possible.
Clinic, guarantee and payment
A public or private clinic is not automatically covered. A payment guarantee has a scope and conditions: ask whether the clinic received it and which costs remain yours.
Insurance payment approval is separate from a doctor’s clinical decision. Do not delay care considered urgent by medical staff for a financial authorisation. Arrange additional tests, admission and transport under your policy when safe. Ask for translation and an explanation before signing an unclear financial undertaking.
For a routine appointment, confirm the referral and payment arrangements. AI-generated illustration, not a photograph of a particular clinic.
Read the limits
Before travel, check territory, dates, limits, excess, contact procedure and claim deadlines. Review existing conditions, pregnancy, dental care, planned treatment, alcohol, transport and activities. These are contract-specific conditions, not universal exclusions.
Check diving, quad biking or other activities against your cover; an extension may be needed. Do not assume a bank-card or package-tour policy covers everything.
Domestic public healthcare entitlement and travel insurance differ. Ask your home insurer about arrangements for Turkey. If relying on a UK GHIC or EHIC, FCDO states these cards are not valid in Turkey. Other bilateral arrangements depend on the actual insurance system, not the language you read.
If you already paid
Notify assistance, explaining why advance approval was impossible. Obtain the medical report, prescriptions, test results, itemised invoice, payment proof and discharge summary if admitted.
Confirm submission deadlines, channel, form, translation and original-document requirements. Keep copies before leaving and retain originals and correspondence until the claim closes. A total-only receipt may be insufficient. Payment and documents do not guarantee reimbursement; request a written decision and review procedure if refused.
Medicines and identification
Check medicine cover separately: a prescription does not automatically guarantee insurance payment. Keep the prescription and an itemised pharmacy receipt. Discuss substitutions with the doctor and pharmacist, not a translation app.
Confirm stock, dispensing requirements and opening hours. Neither prescription-free dispensing nor acceptance of a foreign prescription is guaranteed.
A clinic may need passport details to register you. Do not leave the passport as collateral; ask what information or copies are required. If lost, tell the clinic, present remaining identification and contact your country’s consulate. Do not delay necessary care while searching for documents.
Getting home and staying connected
Check medical transport, an escort, extra accommodation and rebooking separately under the policy. Ask the treating doctor and carrier about fitness to fly and documentation. A ticket is not medical clearance.
Keep the policy and contacts offline. If arriving in Antalya, prepare internet and money for your arrival. For maps, messages and sending documents, install a blueSIM eSIM before travel after checking device and plan conditions. A data package does not imply a local number, ordinary calls or SMS. Use an available telephone line for assistance or 112; ask staff for help if needed.
Bellboy’s advice: keep a short note with the contact, case reference, clinic address, authorised expenses and required documents. Clarify payment arrangements without delaying necessary care.
