Istanbulkart: buying, topping up and sharing a card

Learn how to buy and top up an Istanbulkart. Check fares, separate payments and the limits of discounts and refunds.

Istanbulkart: buying, topping up and sharing a card

Istanbulkart is a reloadable card for Istanbul’s urban transport. For a short visit, you can start with an anonymous card: buy it at a Biletmatik or authorised outlet, then load travel credit separately. Separate cards are more practical for two adults, but do not automatically provide discounts or refunds.

Choose the right product

Distinguish an anonymous Istanbulkart charged per validation, a limited-pass ticket and an İstanbul City Card covering a specified period. Conditions and prices differ. A personal, concession or subscription card is not a shared family pass.

The official city portal Visit Istanbul describes purchasing and loading cards at BELBİM machines and sales representatives. For ordinary trips without claiming a local concession, ask for an anonymous card: Anonim Istanbulkart.

Where to buy and what it costs

Look for a Biletmatik at a transport station or interchange. Metro Istanbul confirms card purchase and top-up at station machines. Starting at the airport? Choose your IST or SAW route to the hotel first: Istanbulkart is not a ticket for every airport coach.

On 11 October 2026, the BELBİM table lists a regular Istanbulkart at 165 TL, with travel credit purchased separately. Metro Istanbul shows the anonymous-card full fare as 46.20 TL. This is the operator’s standard fare reference, not one price for every ferry, railway, night service or airport route.

Read the amount before paying. At a kiosk, ask whether the quoted price includes the card, credit or extra fees. Paying for the physical card does not necessarily load any travel money.

Top up and confirm the balance

  1. Select an available menu language and Istanbulkart top-up.
  2. Place the card on the indicated reader; check that the machine recognises it and displays the balance.
  3. Check the amount, payment method and any fee on screen.
  4. Insert cash or pay by the offered method.
  5. Keep the card on the reader until completion is confirmed.
  6. Check the new balance, then take your card and receipt if available.

Screen order varies by machine. Stop and ask staff if a message is unclear. Check change conditions before inserting a note. Carry small lira notes and a backup payment method; foreign bank-card acceptance depends on the device, network and issuer. With a UK, US or other overseas card, check international use and fees with your bank.

Sharing: each passenger pays separately

Where a route accepts repeated payment with an anonymous card, each passenger validates separately and pays for their own passage. Two people must not pass after one charge. If another tap is rejected, ask staff about the rule instead of bypassing the gate.

Separate cards are useful for different plans and complicated journeys. However, a separate anonymous card does not guarantee a transfer discount or distance refund. IMM links transfer benefits and distance refunds to personalisation and applicable conditions. Do not assume a visitor has a local holder’s entitlements.

Before Marmaray or Metrobus trips, check the route’s fare and refund rules. Do not budget for a refund unless eligibility is confirmed. Personal, concession and subscription entitlements must not be handed to another passenger; the IMM rules address this separately.

Credit, bank cards and internet

Start with credit for a few planned trips, allowing for separate payments and connections. Check the balance before a longer journey. Visit Istanbul warns that unused credit is not refunded simply because your visit ends: avoid loading the whole holiday without calculating.

The city portal also describes contactless bank-card payment as an existing alternative. Check the reader’s symbols, applicable fare and bank conditions; do not assume the charge matches Istanbulkart. The app and physical card are different ways to travel: tapping the plastic card needs no mobile internet.

Save your route offline. For live changes and communication, you can arrange a compatible travel eSIM such as blueSIM. Check Türkiye coverage, validity, activation and internet required for installation. Purchase alone does not guarantee immediate service on arrival.

If the gate stays closed

Read the message, check your balance and present one card away from a wallet containing other contactless cards. Avoid repeated taps after a possible charge. If the result is unclear, ask staff and keep the receipt or transaction details; do not pay again blindly.

Common questions

Does a visitor need to register the card?

An anonymous card can be used without arranging a personal concession. App registration is not automatic eligibility for all discounts. Check personalisation requirements with BELBİM for your situation.

Does it work on ferries?

Yes, on integrated urban routes. A private sightseeing trip or separate operator may require a different ticket. Check the route and fare at the boarding point.

Should I buy a City Card?

Compare the current package, duration and coverage with your journeys. Do not apply anonymous-card rules to the unlimited tourist product.

Bellboy’s advice: separate the card price from credit, passage payment from concessions, and standard travel from special fares. Before the first trip, buy the right product, confirm the top-up and check the price of your actual route.
