Türkiye visas and longer stays: a guide for UK and US citizens
Hello, this is Bellboy. Before a holiday becomes a longer stay, check the entry allowance attached to your passport and the legal basis for staying beyond it.
Hello, this is Bellboy. Before a holiday becomes a longer stay, check the entry allowance attached to your passport and the legal basis for staying beyond it.
British citizens travelling on ordinary British citizen passports for tourism can visit without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. US citizens with ordinary US passports also have a visa-free allowance of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. British National (Overseas), British Subject and British Protected Person passports have different visa requirements; official passports are a separate category.
Reading in English does not determine your nationality. If you hold another passport, check the country and passport category that apply to you.
Leaving and returning does not restart the allowance. Count earlier visits within the rolling 180-day window; a fresh entry cannot restore days already used.
Passport and document requirements
For British citizen passports, UK travel advice requires at least 150 days of validity from arrival and one blank page. US State Department guidance specifies six months from entry for US passports. Follow the guidance for your own passport and route.
Keep your onward or return ticket, accommodation booking or host’s address, evidence of your travel purpose and available funds, and medical insurance accessible. Save offline copies as well.
Visa-free travel remains subject to individual border checks. Keep supporting documents accessible and confirm that the purpose of your trip fits your entry permission.
Bellboy’s advice: if your phone supports eSIM, prepare a blueSIM before departure. Installation requires internet access; check the package’s activation conditions. Keep your booking and address offline even if you arrange mobile data.
A longer stay starts with checking the permitted duration and legal basis. Editorial illustration.
If you want to stay longer
Beyond your available visa-free allowance, you need an appropriate legal basis: a residence permit, work permit, eligible study programme, family residence or another statutory ground. Apply for residence through the official e-İkamet system before your lawful stay ends. Follow its instructions; attendance at the provincial migration office may be required.
Tourist residence is not guaranteed
Short-term residence for tourism is a legal category, but a wish to live in Türkiye or a rental agreement may not suffice. Depending on the case, authorities may request an explanation of the purpose and duration, travel plans, accommodation, valid health insurance, sufficient resources, an address for registration and additional documents.
A report that a neighbourhood has reopened does not confirm that a particular address is suitable for your application. Ask the provincial migration office or YİMER 157 about the exact address, proposed permit category and your circumstances before signing.
Do not rely solely on a landlord’s or intermediary’s promise. Address eligibility and your personal eligibility are separate matters.
Choose a basis that fits your life
Study
Student residence requires enrolment in an eligible Turkish institution and programme. An arbitrary short course does not necessarily qualify.
Work
Employment requires the appropriate work authorisation or a statutory exemption. A valid work permit generally also authorises residence for its duration; an ordinary residence permit alone does not authorise work. See the labour ministry’s guidance.
Registering a company does not automatically grant permission to work or reside.
Property
Residential property used as your home can be a basis for short-term residence. Buying any apartment does not guarantee approval: use, value, ownership documents, address status and other conditions matter. Check DASK insurance requirements when ownership changes.
Family
Family residence may be available to spouses and children of Turkish citizens or qualifying foreign residents, subject to the applicable status, income, insurance and registration conditions. Fictitious marriages or registrations may lead to refusal, cancellation and other consequences.
Do you need a specialist?
You can prepare an application yourself through e-İkamet; using an intermediary is not generally compulsory. For refusals, overstays, property purchases, family issues or changes of category, consider a lawyer licensed in Türkiye who handles migration matters.
Avoid promises of guaranteed approval, fictitious addresses, missing-document shortcuts or approval through personal contacts. No intermediary can promise an unconditional migration decision.
Costs to allow for
The total depends on nationality, duration and category. It can include official fees, the residence card, insurance, notarised translations, rental-document certification, photographs and professional services.
In 2026, the residence-card document fee is 964 Turkish lira. The main permit fee is separate and depends on nationality and requested duration. Consult the official fee table.
Your preparation checklist
For a holiday: check passport validity, arrange your departure ticket and accommodation, obtain insurance, count previous visits and save documents offline.
For a longer stay: identify a genuine legal basis, check the address before renting, prepare financial and insurance evidence and apply within your lawful stay.
Do not treat leaving and returning as a reset, or an eligible address as a guarantee.
If a holiday may become a longer stay, prepare the documents before travelling and apply before your lawful stay ends.
