From Istanbul airports to the city: IST and SAW routes
Choose by your hotel address, arrival time and bags. Compare M11, M4, Havaist, Havabus, taxis and booked transfers.
Find IST or SAW on your ticket, then save your accommodation’s exact address. From IST, compare M11 with Havaist; from SAW, compare M4 with Havabus. A taxi or booked transfer can take you to the address. Choose by the whole journey, not just its first leg.
“The centre” is not precise enough in Istanbul. Taksim, Sultanahmet and Kadıköy are different destinations. A bus with a familiar name may stop far from your hotel, while a quick train may involve a long walk with bags.
Check the airport and district
IST — Istanbul Airport: the European side.
SAW — Sabiha Gökçen: the Asian side.
Save the property name, district and address in Turkish. Allow for baggage collection and arrival formalities, waiting, connections and the walk from the final stop. Compare the route to your actual door.
From IST: M11 or Havaist
M11: choose the direction before boarding
The line connects Gayrettepe, Istanbul Airport and Halkalı. Türkiye’s transport ministry confirmed the final section opened in June 2026. Airport railway signs may use the line’s name; check the destination and map alongside the number.
Gayrettepe: change to M2 for Taksim and other stations on that line.
Halkalı: Marmaray connections and western districts. Check the route and departures with TCDD Taşımacılık.
M11 is not a direct train to Taksim Square or Sultanahmet. Include your connections when planning. Rail avoids road traffic, but station access, waiting and the last leg add time. With heavy bags, children or limited mobility, check lifts and the walking route before choosing.
Check M11’s timetable separately. Metro Istanbul’s overnight services on city lines do not mean the airport line runs all night. Keep an alternative for a late arrival.
Havaist: check the stop and ticket conditions
Havaist identifies floor −2 for arriving passengers at IST. Follow airport signs to the appropriate route. The luggage compartment helps with suitcases, but the final stop may still require another ride.
Before paying, check direction, stop, current fare and the next departure. Road traffic affects the journey. The operator publishes bank-card payment information; for an online purchase, read the QR ticket’s validity carefully. Standard Havaist sales do not reserve a particular date, departure time or seat: a ticket does not replace checking the service.
Do not apply Havaist’s payment rules to Havabus, a city bus or the metro. Istanbulkart is not automatically a ticket for every airport coach.

From SAW: M4 or Havabus
M4 and connections to the European side
M4 Kadıköy–Sabiha Gökçen Airport serves the Asian side. The operator gives around 52 minutes for the full line to Kadıköy, excluding waiting, arrival procedures and the journey to your hotel.
For Sirkeci, consider M4 → Ayrılık Çeşmesi → Marmaray → Sirkeci. Then compare walking with tram T1 for the final address in the historic centre. Kadıköy offers connections to boats and ferries, with separate timetables. For Taksim, compare Havabus against a rail route with connections.
M4’s published normal hours are 06:00–00:00. It is included in Night Metro on Friday-to-Saturday and Saturday-to-Sunday nights, with separate operating and fare conditions. This does not guarantee overnight Marmaray, T1 or every onward connection. Check all legs for your date and any service notices.
Havabus and Havaist serve different routes
Havabus publishes services linking SAW with Taksim and Kadıköy, plus information about the Yenisahra stop. Check the direction: a timetable to the airport is not the arrival timetable. Confirm departures, journey estimates and payment for your route before boarding.
HEAŞ separately lists Havaist between IST/IGA and SAW. Do not choose a coach for your hotel simply because you recognise its brand: check where that service goes. City buses operated by İETT have their own routes and conditions; the airport page also provides details.
Istanbulkart and a payment backup
Metro Istanbul’s FAQ explains buying and topping up Istanbulkart at station Biletmatik machines. Allow for purchasing a card and enough balance for the route. Systems and connections can charge separately; concessions on personalised cards do not automatically apply to visitors.
Keep a small lira reserve and a second payment method. Check the TRY price and any fee before confirming. A terminal or ATM may offer conversion to pounds or dollars: compare DCC terms first. Selecting lira avoids the merchant’s conversion, but your issuer can still charge fees.
With a UK or US card, ask your issuer about Türkiye transactions, cash withdrawals, limits and verification messages. Other cards depend on their own issuer and network. The reader’s language or nationality does not determine acceptance; do not rely on a single untested card.
Taxi or booked transfer
Use the marked airport rank and show the full address before boarding. For a regular taxi, confirm the meter, possible toll roads, bridges or tunnels, payment and vehicle size. Ask for a receipt. An unsolicited offer inside the terminal does not establish official status.
For a transfer, obtain a written total price and inclusions: tolls, parking, waiting after a flight delay, meeting, luggage and a child seat if needed. Confirm IST or SAW, flight number and meeting point. A fixed price is useful together with clear conditions; a transfer is not necessarily cheaper than a taxi.
Prepare connectivity and a short plan
Save your route and address offline. Check your provider’s Türkiye roaming terms: a UK domestic allowance or a US international option may require a separate package or activation. A compatible, unlocked phone can install blueSIM before travel. Check Türkiye coverage, validity and activation. Installation needs internet; service after landing depends on the package, settings and network. Calls and SMS are not always included.
Match IST or SAW on the flight and transport booking.
Save the district, Turkish address and accommodation contact.
Compare the entire route, connections, bags and final stop.
Check each last departure and an alternative.
Prepare a card, lira and your operator’s payment terms.
Confirm a transfer’s meeting point, waiting and total price.
Leave time in reserve for the return flight.
If a bag fails to arrive, report it at the airport before leaving.
Bellboy’s advice: choose rail for a journey free of road traffic, a coach for a useful stop and luggage space, or a taxi or transfer for the trip to your address. Airport and accommodation first; transport second.
