Money for Türkiye: cards, lira and currency exchange
Prepare cards and cash for Türkiye. Compare exchange offers, understand ATM costs and keep a separate payment reserve.
For a trip to Türkiye, combine a card that works abroad, a little cash in Turkish lira and a separate reserve. Euros or US dollars can be useful for exchange, but start with your own bank’s terms rather than a universal travel rule.
Prepare before departure
A primary card enabled for purchases and cash withdrawals in Türkiye.
A backup: another usable card or accessible cash.
Lira for your first expenses, or a clear plan for getting some on arrival.
Your bank’s contact details, app access, PIN and checked spending limits.
Keep the reserve separately. Two cards from one bank may share an account restriction. Compare the total cost of your exchange route before buying a currency simply because someone recommends it.
Lira, euros or dollars?
Use Turkish lira — TRY — as your reference for everyday prices. If a merchant offers to take euros or dollars, ask for the price in lira and compare the total. Accepting foreign cash does not guarantee a favourable rate.
If you already hold euros or dollars, they can serve as an exchange reserve. If your funds are in pounds sterling, compare the cost of buying foreign cash with your card’s charges. A UK or US reader should not automatically buy euros: extra exchanges can add costs.
TCMB provides a useful reference. Its published indicative rates do not bind commercial exchanges; the actual bank or exchange office quote is what matters.
Check your particular card
Ask your issuer about purchases, ATM withdrawals, foreign transaction charges, limits and verification in Türkiye. Acceptance in a shop does not mean free withdrawals or support at every ATM. A credit card may have separate cash advance charges and interest terms.
The issuer and country of issue matter more than the language you read. If you hold a Russian-issued Visa or Mastercard, the restrictions announced by Visa and Mastercard affect its use abroad. Check other networks and issuers individually rather than relying on a logo.
Use a card where accepted and keep cash for small purchases, tips or a terminal outage. Confirm payment options before taking a taxi or ordering a service. A phone wallet is useful but does not remove the need for a reserve: batteries run out.
Compare exchange offices by the final amount
Döviz signs identify currency exchange. Look at the rate for buying the currency you hand over. Ask how many lira you will receive after all charges, compare the same amounts, count the cash at the counter and retain the receipt.
An airport exchange can cover initial expenses. Do not assume every city office offers a better deal; compare actual quotes. Avoid exchanging cash with a stranger in the street.

Three separate ATM costs
Distinguish the ATM operator’s fee, your issuer’s withdrawal charges and the currency conversion cost. A claim of “no commission” from one party does not remove charges from the other.
An ATM or card terminal may offer to bill you in your account currency. This can be dynamic currency conversion, or DCC. Visa explains the disclosure and choice requirements.
A practical starting choice is TRY without the merchant’s or ATM’s conversion, leaving conversion to your issuer and network. This does not guarantee the best rate in every case or cancel other fees. If the terms are unclear, cancel and compare another option. Do not select a large coloured button simply because it stands out.
Choose an ATM where you can read the screen comfortably and contact the bank if needed. Shield your PIN, decline help from strangers and check the status of an unclear transaction before repeating it.
Internet access and bank verification
Mobile data helps you check charges, locate a branch and reach support. If considering blueSIM, check device compatibility, coverage and activation terms for the selected package first.
A data package does not necessarily receive SMS sent to your banking number. If your bank uses SMS verification, arrange access to that SIM abroad separately. Save support contacts and a backup way to access your account before leaving.
Bellboy’s advice
Prepare first-day payment, bank access and a separate reserve. Check the final amount in lira and all fees before confirming. There is no universal cash budget: prepaid accommodation, your route and daily spending change what you need.
